How to Attract Skilled Employees to Your Regional Business

Your next great employee might be living in the city, wondering whether there’s a better way to work and live.
They may enjoy their trade or profession but be tired of long commutes, expensive housing and having little time left at the end of the day.
A job with your business could offer more than a change of employer. It could open the door to a different lifestyle.
In our previous article, How to Attract Skilled Employees Through Social Media, we discussed showing people what it’s like to work for your business before you need to hire.
Now you have a vacancy. It’s time to bring that groundwork together and give someone a reason to consider your business and your town.
Promote the lifestyle alongside the job
When recruiting from out of town, the job is only part of the decision.
A potential employee may also be thinking about where they would live, what their partner would do and whether their children would settle in.
Help them picture everyday life in your area. Depending on your town, the benefits could include:
- More affordable housing or more house and land for their money.
- Shorter commutes and less time in traffic.
- More time for family, friends and interests outside work.
- Local sporting clubs, community groups and events.
- Easy access to the outdoors.
- The chance to become part of a close community.
Be specific and realistic. Housing prices, rental availability and travel times vary between towns, so use local examples rather than broad promises.
A photo of a local sports ground, a staff member’s short trip to work or a link to homes currently available can make the opportunity easier to imagine.
Give them a good reason to join your business
The lifestyle may attract their attention, but the job still needs to stand on its own.
Explain what makes the role worthwhile. That might be good pay, predictable hours, varied projects, modern equipment, training or the opportunity to take on more responsibility.
Where possible, include the pay range, working hours, location and the type of work involved. Explain vehicle arrangements and overtime expectations if they apply.
Avoid relying on phrases such as “great conditions” or “competitive remuneration”. Give people enough detail to weigh up the opportunity.
Be clear about essential qualifications and licences, while identifying skills you’re willing to teach.
Show that a regional move can support their career
Someone may like the idea of country life but worry about limiting their career options.
Show them what they could achieve with your business.
Could they lead a team, learn new skills, work across a wider variety of projects or help shape a growing business? Do you support further training or offer a path into management?
If someone in your team has already moved to the area, invite them to share their experience. What brought them here? What surprised them? What do they enjoy about their work and life now?
An honest account can help answer questions that a standard job advertisement won’t.
Help the whole household picture the move
Moving for work often involves more than one person.
Create a page on your website that introduces your town and links to useful information about schools, childcare, health services, housing and recreation.
Consider what a partner might need too, including employment options and ways to meet people.
You don’t need to become a relocation service. A helpful starting point shows that you understand the decision they’re making.
Be honest about practical challenges, including rental availability. If you can offer relocation assistance, temporary accommodation or flexibility with a starting date, make that clear.
Use paid Facebook advertising to reach beyond your town
A vacancy shared on your own Facebook page is a useful start, but recruiting from elsewhere requires reaching people outside your usual audience.
Paid Facebook and Instagram advertising can help put the opportunity in front of people in selected locations, including those who aren’t actively browsing job websites.
You might promote the role in a nearby regional centre or a city where the combination of work and country lifestyle could appeal.
Make the occupation, job location and strongest benefits clear from the start. Someone scrolling past should quickly understand what the opportunity is and where it could take them.
Use the audience options permitted for employment campaigns. Age, gender and occupation targeting should not be assumed to be available, as Meta applies specific rules to employment advertising.
The aim is to spend your budget reaching potential candidates and generating useful enquiries. Review where suitable enquiries come from and adjust the campaign as you learn.
Make a confidential enquiry easy
Someone considering a move may have plenty of questions before they’re ready to apply.
Offer a confidential conversation with a named person. Let them ask about the work, pay, town and moving arrangements without needing to prepare a full application first.
Provide a private phone number, email address or short website enquiry form. Let them nominate a suitable contact time, including after work where practical.
Explain that their current employer won’t be contacted without permission, and make sure your recruitment process honours that commitment.
An initial conversation gives both sides a chance to explore whether the opportunity could be a good fit.
Bring the job and lifestyle together on your website
Give the vacancy its own website page and link to it from your advertisements and social posts.
Include the role, benefits, essential requirements, workplace photos, information about the area and a clear way to enquire.
This is where the content you’ve already created becomes valuable. Potential employees can meet your team, see your projects and get a feel for the workplace before making contact.
If the conversation progresses, consider inviting them to visit, meet the team and look around town. Be clear beforehand about any help you can provide with travel or accommodation.
Offer a next step they can picture
Attracting someone from out of town takes more than announcing a vacancy.
You’re helping them consider a new job, a new home and a new community. Clear information, real examples and a welcoming first conversation can make that decision easier to explore.
At Waterfall Way Designs, we can help bring your vacancy page, local lifestyle content and paid advertising together, so people beyond your town can discover what your business and region have to offer.
